Chapter 5

1 THEN all the tribes of Israel came to David at Hebron and said to him, Behold, we are your flesh and your bone.

2 Also in time past, when Saul was king over us, it was you who led out and brought in Israel; and the LORD said to you, You shall feed my people Israel, and you shall be a ruler over my people Israel.

3 So all the elders of Israel came to the king at Hebron; and King David made a covenant with them in Hebron before the LORD; and they anointed David king over Israel.

4 David was thirty years old when he began to reign, and he reigned forty years.

5 In Hebron he reigned over Judah seven years and six months; and in Jerusalem he reigned thirty-three years over all Israel and Judah.

6 And King David and his men went to Jerusalem against the Jebusites, the inhabitants of the land, who spoke to David, saying, You shall not come in here, except you destroy both the blind and the lame; and they said, David cannot come in here.

7 Nevertheless David took the stronghold of Zion; the same is the city of David.

8 And David said on that day, Whosoever smites a Jebusite and whosoever strikes with a weapon the blind and the lame, he is a hater of David's soul. Therefore they say, The blind and the lame shall not come into the temple.

9 So David dwelt in the fort, that is, Zion; and he called it the city of David. And David built round about the fort from within.

10 And David continued to become greater, and the LORD God of hosts was with him.

11 And Hiram king of Tyre sent messengers to David, and cedar trees and carpenters and masons; and they built David a house.

12 And David perceived that the LORD had established him king over Israel, and that he had exalted his kingdom for the sake of his people Israel.

13 And David took more concubines and wives from Jerusalem, after he was come from Hebron; and there were more sons and daughters born to David.

14 And these are the names of the sons who were born to him in Jerusalem: Shammuah, Shachab, Nathan, Solomon,

15 Jocabar, Elisha, Nepheg, Naphia,

16 Elishama, Eliada, and Eliphalet.

17 But when the Philistines heard that they had anointed David king over Israel, all the Philistines came up to seek David; and David heard of it, and went down to the fort.

18 The Philistines also came and encamped in the Valley of Giants.

19 And David inquired of the LORD, saying, Shall I go up against the Philistines? Wilt thou deliver them into my hands? And the LORD said to David, Go up; for I will deliver them into your hands.

20 And David came to Baal-perazim, and David defeated them there, and David said, The LORD has made a breach through my enemies before me, like the breach of waters. Therefore he called the name of that place Baal-perazim.

21 And they left their idols there, and David and his men carried them away.

22 And the Philistines came up yet again and encamped in the Valley of the Giants.

23 And when David inquired of the LORD, the LORD said to him, You shall not go up; but circle behind them, and come upon them opposite Bachim.

24 And when you hear the sound of marching on the top of the mountain of Bachim, then you shall become strong; for then shall the LORD go out before you to smite the army of the Philistines.

25 And David did as the LORD had commanded him; and he smote the Philistines from Geba to the entrance of Gadar.

Chapter 5

1 Then came935 all3605 the tribes7626 of Israel3478 to David1732 to Hebron,2275 and spoke,559 saying,559 Behold,2005 we are your bone6106 and your flesh.1320

2 Also1571 in time865 8543 past,8032 when Saul7586 was king4428 over5921 us, you were1961 he that led3318 out and brought935 in Israel:3478 and the LORD3068 said559 to you, You shall feed7462 my people5971 Israel,3478 and you shall be a captain5057 over5921 Israel.3478

3 So all3605 the elders2205 of Israel3478 came935 to the king4428 to Hebron;2275 and king4428 David1732 made3772 a league1285 with them in Hebron2275 before6440 the LORD:3068 and they anointed4886 David1732 king4428 over5921 Israel.3478

4 David1732 was thirty7970 years8141 old1121 when he began to reign,4427 and he reigned4427 forty705 years.8141

5 In Hebron2275 he reigned4427 over5921 Judah3063 seven7651 years8141 and six8337 months:2320 and in Jerusalem3389 he reigned4427 thirty7970 and three7969 years8141 over5921 all3605 Israel3478 and Judah.3063

6 And the king4428 and his men582 went3212 to Jerusalem3389 to the Jebusites,2983 the inhabitants3427 of the land:776 which spoke559 to David,1732 saying,559 Except3588 518 you take5493 away5493 the blind5787 and the lame,6455 you shall not come935 in here: thinking,559 David1732 cannot3808 come935 in here.

7 Nevertheless David1732 took3920 the strong4686 hold4686 of Zion:6726 the same1931 is the city5892 of David.1732

8 And David1732 said559 on that day,3117 Whoever gets5060 up to the gutter,6794 and smites5221 the Jebusites,2983 and the lame6455 and the blind 5787that are hated8130 of David's1732 soul,5315 he shall be chief and captain. Why5921 3651 they said,559 The blind5787 and the lame6455 shall not come935 into413 the house.1004

9 So David1732 dwelled3427 in the fort,4686 and called7121 it the city5892 of David.1732 And David1732 built1129 round5439 about from Millo4407 and inward.1004

10 And David1732 went3212 on, and grew great,1419 and the LORD3068 God430 of hosts6635 was with him.

11 And Hiram2438 king4428 of Tyre6865 sent7971 messengers4397 to David,1732 and cedar730 trees,6086 and carpenters,2796 6086 and masons:2796 68 and they built1129 David1732 an house.1004

12 And David1732 perceived3045 that the LORD3068 had established3559 him king4428 over5921 Israel,3478 and that he had exalted5375 his kingdom4467 for his people5971 Israel's3478 sake.5668

13 And David1732 took3947 him more5750 concubines6370 and wives802 out of Jerusalem,3389 after310 he was come935 from Hebron:2275 and there were yet5750 sons1121 and daughters1323 born3205 to David.1732

14 And these428 be the names8034 of those that were born3209 to him in Jerusalem;3389 Shammuah,8051 and Shobab,7727 and Nathan,5416 and Solomon,8010

15 Ibhar2984 also, and Elishua,474 and Nepheg,5298 and Japhia,3309

16 And Elishama,476 and Eliada,450 and Eliphalet.467

17 But when the Philistines6430 heard8085 that they had anointed4886 David1732 king4428 over5921 Israel,3478 all3605 the Philistines6430 came5927 up to seek1245 David;1732 and David1732 heard8085 of it, and went3381 down3381 to the hold.4686

18 The Philistines6430 also came935 and spread5203 themselves in the valley6010 of Rephaim.7497

19 And David1732 inquired7592 of the LORD,3068 saying,559 Shall I go5927 up to the Philistines?6430 will you deliver5414 them into my hand?3027 And the LORD3068 said559 to David,1732 Go5927 up: for I will doubtless deliver5414 the Philistines6430 into your hand.3027

20 And David1732 came935 to Baalperazim,1188 and David1732 smote5221 them there,8033 and said,559 The LORD3068 has broken6555 forth on my enemies341 before6440 me, as the breach6556 of waters.4325 Therefore5921 3651 he called7121 the name8034 of that place4725 Baalperazim.1188

21 And there8033 they left5800 their images,6091 and David1732 and his men582 burned5375 them.

22 And the Philistines6430 came5927 up yet5750 again,3254 and spread5203 themselves in the valley6010 of Rephaim.7497

23 And when David1732 inquired7592 of the LORD,3068 he said,559 You shall not go5927 up; but fetch a compass5437 behind310 them, and come935 on them over4136 against4136 the mulberry1057 trees.

24 And let it be, when you hear8085 the sound6963 of a going6807 in the tops7218 of the mulberry1057 trees, that then227 you shall bestir2782 yourself: for then227 shall the LORD3068 go3318 out before6440 you, to smite5221 the host4264 of the Philistines.6430

25 And David1732 did6213 so,3651 as the LORD3068 had commanded6680 him; and smote5221 the Philistines6430 from Geba1387 until5704 you come935 to Gazer.1507
